Whether you’re looking for a Christmas tree, buying gifts, or shopping for decorations, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is played everywhere during the holiday season. It has come to a point where it is considered to be THE Christmas song. This has been the case for 25 years in a row. You probably know the lyrics by heart, and you definitely listen to it immediately after Halloween is over. Here are seven facts you need to know about the world’s favorite Christmas song!

1) It was written and composed in a jiff

It took Mariah Cary and Walter Afanasieff just 15 minutes to write and compose “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Carey was inspired while decorating her home in upstate New York. She figured she could capture the essence of Christmas by writing a song. The simplicity of the songs makes it a catchy hit. The song is part of her music album “Merry Christmas,” which was released on October 29, 1994.

2) It does not feature actual instruments

You might be thinking that the song features a band, but no. Afanasieff recorded the vocals of Carey and her backup singer, but he used his computer to create synthetic music.

3) It’s a hit ringtone

Back then, setting customized ringtones was a thing. People would download their favorite songs on their phones to set them as ringtones and show the world their music taste. It took us a while to realize that setting our ringtones, and more so our alarms, to our favorite songs will ruin the songs for us. However, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is clearly an exception. The Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) certified this song with a double-platinum, making it the first holiday song to hold this title. On October 9, 2019, the RIAA certified Carey’s holiday hit with a 6x multi-platinum.

4) The music video is as romantic as the lyrics

The song is about Carey’s wish to be with the person she loves. She magically managed to combine romance and festivity into one song. The man dressed up as Santa Clause in the music video is her then-husband, Tommy Mottola. It also features her cute little dog, Jack.

5) It was not immediately featured on the Billboard Chart’s Hot 100

Back then, only singles made the chart. “All I Want for Christmas Is You”  was released as a promotional single to radio stations exclusively. The rules were changed in December 1998, and the song rocked the Hot 100 chart ever since.

6) Mariah Carey just announced a Christmas tour

The “All I Want for Christmas Is You” tour is expected to be as iconic as the hit. Carey will go on tour in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Washington, Uncasville, Boston, and New York.

7) There’s a movie based on it

“All I Want for Christmas Is You,” also known as Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” is a 2017 animated movie based on Mariah Carey’s iconic Christmas song. The movie, which is narrated by Carey, follows young Mariah, who desperately wants a dog for Christmas. Her parents are not convinced that she is ready for this type of commitment, so they offer her to babysit her uncle’s dog, Jack. If she could take care of him, they will get her a puppy of her own.

The holidays are just around the corner! Time to listen to “All I Want for Christmas Is You” on repeat!
